Testosterone! If your body isn’t making enough testosterone, we need to give you testosterone. There are also a variety of other medications that can be added to optimize your regimen, if needed.
There are some newly released oral formulations. We have chosen to prescribe testosterone creams or injections due to the proven safety and efficacy as well as ease of titration to your specific needs. Our preferred method is self injections.
We can easily train you or a loved one to safely administer your medications at home.
You can expect to have your blood drawn every few months until you are dialed in on a safe, effective regimen. Then labs will be drawn every 6 months. Labs may need to be done if you experience adverse affects or adjustments are made to your regimen.
Labs are drawn through Labcorp in Anchorage or Walgreens in Wasilla. Appointments are recommended.
Every medication comes with the risk of side effects. We work hard to minimize your risk and maximize your benefit. Possible common side effects include; elevated hematocrit, enlargement of the prostate, acne, and balding.
Testosterone therapy will reduce sperm production and has the potential to make it more difficult to have children.
No. Insurance companies have strict criteria and generally consider testosterone to be “normal” between 350-950. This is a huge range and does not account for free (bioavailable testosterone). We consider your symptoms and treat you as a whole person instead of focusing solely on a numerical value. Our goal is to find YOUR normal and we cannot do that under the constraints imposed by insurance.
Yes. There are risks with every medication so we strive to find the optimal dose to relieve your symptoms. We have a large collection of scientific articles that we will happily share and review with you. You are encouraged to do your own research.
Past studies had raised concern for the possibility of an increased risk of stroke or heart attack for patients on testosterone replacement, these studies were small and poorly designed, with elderly participants. Fortunately, newer data shows that LOW testosterone may be associated with and increased risk of stroke and heart attack as well as worse outcomes with COVID.
Your body will need time to adjust to the loss of external testosterone. We will happily work with you if you decide that you want to stop therapy. It may take several months for your body to adjust to making your own testosterone again. There are adjunctive medications available that can help your body resume testosterone production again.
